I smell bacon right now, overcooked breakfast bacon from this morning. It’s no secret that our sense of smell affects our mood and stimulates past memories. When we think of home decor, most of us don’t include the fragrance that surrounds the style of our home. Including a complementary scent to your decor will stimulate the experience for you, your family and guests, and add another dimension to your homes personality.
What are your favorite smells? Do they match you decor style?
Traditional English Decor with floral patterns: lavender, fresh blooms, clean scents
Rustic Decor with wood accents: trees, grass scents such as cedar, balsam fir, fig tree, lemon grass
Contemporary with graphics (color and bold): citrus, acidic fruits such as grapefruit, lemons, ginger
Contemporary with blend of whites, grays and blacks: white floral, magnolia, jasmine, orchid
European Decor with mix of antiques and international styles: warm scents, vanilla, spices, sandalwood
Not surprising, bacon scent doesn’t fit any of the decor styles. Cedar is my all time favorite scent, probably because it brings back memories of my teenage cedar chest that stored some of my precious childhood treasures.
Candles, potpourri, fragrance room sprays, reed diffusers, aroma nebulizers, soaps and fresh blooms are just a few easy ways to add scent to your home.
What ever your decor style and complementary scent preference, make it 100% your own.
Are you a crafty or artsy person? Do you look at other people's artwork and immediately think "that's cool, but I can do that myself"? This past year I had the chance to visit the high-end Scottsdale Art Festival in Arizona. I left with art envy. Scottsdale was a good lesson. I have always been a [...]
Today I paused. When putting together a Nuthatch website banner to promote new jewelry, I was trying to find a complementary styled book as a backdrop. None on my shelf seemed to fit. I started digging in my memory bank. Digging in past memories usually derails any plans I had made for the day. Today [...]
Do you still give paper cards as, or with, gifts? While Facebook, texting and other social media have made it more convenient to wish a friend happy birthday, fortunately paper cards have not gone entirely extinct. In fact, taking the time to purchase or send a paper card offers an unwritten sentiment that you cared enough to [...]
I prefer things of substance, reliability and longevity. Most products offered at Nuthatch Decor and Gifts are made of cast iron, ceramics, metals, wood, glass or canvas. My own decor style is in displaying things of material substance and strength. Each material has a history of their own and has survived years and years of [...]
(Las Vegas World Market Center - Building B) This past January I was fortunate to travel to Las Vegas for a home and gift trade show at the Las Vegas World Market Center. Having been warned that a home and gift trade show could be a little overwhelming for newbies, I am happy to report that [...]
How can we repay gratitude to someone who sacrificed their life for our liberty and freedom? How can we relieve the grief of families who have lost a service member? The answer is, we cannot. A life lost is infinite. All we can do is continue to remember and honor those who have [...]
I was not blessed with the creative home decorator gene and really admire people who have that natural talent--you know who you are. Like many, I watch television, thumb through magazines and pinterest to get ideas. Sometimes accomplishing what I had envisioned, and other times looking at it in wonder of what went wrong. For me, being [...]
